This Week...

This week we didn't really have a schedule for most of our classes. Yet in one of my classes, we continued to do work throughout the week. I realized that although most students will complain about the extra work, it really does benefit us in the end. Though math has never really been my favorite subject, it now has become that I enjoy and understand.

Mrs.Orr is one of the most dedicated teachers I have seen. She opens her classes up most days after school to students who are struggling and need a little push. I have never felt like I couldn't ask a question in her class because she makes it known that she wants to help us learn. I know that's not something you can learn in things such as a textbook, but I do think it is something valuable that we should all experience sometime in our schooling.

This week...

This week we learned in class about discipline. Mrs.Powell came in and talked about how to handle certain situations in the classroom. She told us about how some kids can get out of control and then you have to act accordingly to fix the problem. Also, Shelby told some pretty interesting stories in which the class replied to pretty nicely.

We worked on our lesson plans that are due this Thursday, and I chose Mrs.Borchers for my teacher.

This week...

This week was kind of rough as to what we were learning. Mrs.Cantrell handed us a paper with many projects that we'll be doing over the course of this year. Though many weren't hard, I know it's going to take a while so I need to keep myself organized with due dates and such.

Also, this week I learned that grades will never just be handed out and if a problem comes up, you have to find a way to solve it by yourself. Even though you know some teachers may have lost your work, if they don't believe you then you just have to find a way to do it because in the end you'll be the one with the bad grade on your report card.

So now, I'm having to do multiple assignments over, but I'll get it done!

This week...

So, this is the week before Thanksgiving break. Our cooperative learning experience was due this week. I did mine with my mom's class. It was more challenging than I had expected. The kids wouldn't listen and they would get up even when I told them to stay down and be quiet, so it was definitely not the experience I was expecting.

Also, I am learning about time management in many of my classes because I have been doing a lot of procrastination lately and that really isn't working out well for me so we're going over in time management in one of my classes which should be really useful in the future.

So that's about it!

This week!

This week I learned about the importance of having respect in the classroom. When I tried teaching in the classroom at Career Shadowing, a lot of the kids would not listen to me and most of them wouldn't even look me in the eye. So, I realize it's now hard for teachers to get their students attention and keep it for that matter.

Also, I had a bad experience with a substitute and I really think there should be some sort of a test that subs should do in order to be placed in the classroom. Because of this, it would be a lot harder for people to qualify to become a substitute.

This week..

This week we worked on a number of things in class. One thing we did was work on our cooperative teaching assignment. I chose to do Ms.Cullins and she wants me to do mine on the factors of the economy. Though I learned this in 8th grade, I'm still going to have to refresh myself on the material, before I try to teach it to the class. I was supposed to do my presentation on Monday, but I was sick so I wasn't able to get in there. Therefore, my presentation will be on Wednesday next week.

We're starting a thing about discipline. We have to make a brochure about what discipline is. I'm not really sure on how to do this assignment, so I'm pretty sure I'm going to fail. :D

Bulletin Board for Mr.Kawaihae

I did my bulletin board for Mr.Kawaihae. He wanted the theme to be on Medieval Times. At first I didn't think I could make a creative background and that it would only be information, but as I was looking at pictures on the internet, I found a picture of a castle and thought it would be a good idea to do one out of aluminum foil. After that, I got a time line and a few pictures of artifacts that I could put on there to be interesting.
Altogether, this project was fairly easy and fun to do.

Week #8

This week I learned what it was like to create a lesson plans. I thought teachers would have a free range and they would be able to do whatever they wanted. But in some cases you have to follow that the state wants you to, which puts pressure on teachers and takes away some of their teaching methods and styles.

Also, This week I learned how much is sucks to procrastinate. I had a big project due and waited till the last second to do it, so I'm going to try and work on that as a student. Also, now that I'm getting into harder history classes, I'm going to need to study a bit more.

Week #7

This week in class we chose a teacher to do a bulletin board for. I chose to do Mr.Kawaihae, thinking he would be a fun teacher to work for and he would choose something easy to put up. When I went to go talk to him though, he wanted me to do Medieval stuff, which I absolutely know nothing about.

I also learned that I HATE substitute teachers. All they do is give us busy work and we learn absolutely nothing while they are here. Even though they let us break the rules and whatnot, it's still a boring way to spend the week.

This week...

This week I was really thinking about how teachers affect our lives. Though we can sit and talk about how much we hate being in class, and how we'd rather be off doing better things with our friends or family.

Two years ago, my band director, Mr.Hawks passed away. I never really thought about how much I cherished having them there and helping me. When he died, it hit me hard as I didn't see it coming and I couldn't go back to tell him how valuable in my life.

Now when I have teachers that I really have a connection with, I make sure to let them know that they mean something to us. Maybe if we all told Mr.Hawks how much of an inspiration he was to us, he would still be alive today. It's something that I think about all the time.

I don't know if this is something "I learned this week" but it's something I definitely became aware of.

What I learned this week about Education...

This week I learned about how valuable teachers can be when it comes to learning. For Spanish 1, we have a substitute and all she does is give us work that's too hard for us and busy work. Before, when we had our teacher, I actually felt like I was learning something. Now I feel as though I'm behind as every one else and Spanish 2 is going to be hard for me next year.

I also am learning how to cope with the different teaching methods. Although I still fall asleep in class sometimes, I'm learning that if you make a way to make jokes out of the teachers sometimes, you seem to understand what they're saying a little bit more.

Off of the blog I'm subscribed too, I've started researching different requirements I'm going to need to become a Band Director.

Website Information...

In class, we had to do an RSS feed to a teacher blog. Seeing as though I want to be a band director, I decided to choose two blogs that are posted for tips in conducting/teaching band.

One of the tips they advice is in order to teach music, you have to act like a business person. In other words, you have to teach what you're selling. If a student isn't catching on that you love music, they're not going to have the want to love music themselves.

It also goes into band directors having a process of finding people to help their students. The blog states that it's important to get people you trust to help your students, otherwise they could fall down instead of building up.

The other blog talks about percussion, which I'm not really into but it could be interesting.

What I learned this week...

This week, we learned about the multiple intelligences a person might have. Out of the seven possible intelligences, my top three were Musical, Intra-personal and Linguistic. Although I see myself as musical, I didn't expect the intra-personal or linguistic. It came as a shock too that I wasn't inter-personal, even though most of them time, my life is consumed by my friends. I'm not arguing with my results, I'm just kind of baffled by the fact that I didn't know myself as well as I thought I did.

Also, I'm learning how to cope with different teaching methods. Some of my teachers like doing lectures for 50 minutes, and it bores me completely, but I've been trying my best to just deal with it and still learn. It's something I struggle with, but hopefully it's an obstacle I can overcome.

From Negative to Positive

Music has been a passion for most of my life, So I joined band as of sixth grade. Things were and up and down battle when it came to the connection with the teacher. Respect was a one way street most of the time and boredom filled the air of the classroom.

Currently, a new band director has stepped in for a short while and has already turned the whole band program inside out. Mr.Mulvaney has been trying his hardest to connect with the students and make the 50 minutes of band class every day worthwhile. Though he is only he temporarily, he has definitely made a large effect that most of us will carry through for the rest of the year.

Many of the students now look forward to going to band class, rather than dreading that part of the day. It was definitely a flip from Negative to Positive. :)
